GAL ADOPTION PROCEDURE

An adoption application can be filled out at any of GAL's Adoption Day Events. One of our
Adoption Counselors will discuss information pertaining to the care and safety of the greyhound you are considering adopting.
Please keep in mind that not all individuals or homes are right for a retired racer. If your application is approved,
our Adoption Counselor will work with you in completing the adoption process.
-
GAL has a non-refundable adoption fee of $175.00.
-
You will also be expected to purchase a Martingale collar & lead from GAL for $16.00
prior to being allowed to leave with your new greyhound.
-
You will need to have an ID tag made up at the store with your information on it to go along
with the GAL ID tag the greyhound will wear.
-
Your greyhound will have been spayed or neutered, had a dental, vaccinations, ear flushing, deworming
and a health check.

Senior Greyhounds
A Greyhound is
considered a "senior" when it reaches seven years of age or older. Although senior greyhounds are typically finalizing
their retirement, they make a great companion as well as an excellent couch decoration. Senior greyhounds have many
added bonuses in their personality that some younger greyhounds do not posess. Most senior greyhounds seem to have endless
tolerance and patience where children are concerned. Senior greyhounds are docile and gentle in their ways which also
makes them wonderful companions for the average adopter, but also for the elderly.
There are two
typical reasons why a senior greyhound may be searching for their forever home:
One instance is
when they arrive at the adoption kennel at a young age and soon find a family who would like them to be a part of the family
and share a home full of love. Eventually changes occur due to several reasons: divorce, relocation, the owners become
elderly or have health complications and can no longer care for their greyhound, the family may grow and add children or additional
pets to their home, or they simply no longer wish to share their home with a senior greyhound who is now more relaxed in their
ways. Whichever the reason, the senior greyhound is once again residing at the adoption kennel and looking for a new
home.
Another instance
is when a greyhound is used for the breeding of other racing greyhounds during their time at the race track. Once the
greyhound is no longer capable of performing this job, they are released to an adoption agency to find their forever home.
This can happen at any age, but many senior greyhounds are typically between 8 and 12 years of age who are released from this
duty.
No matter the
circumstances, providing a home for a senior greyhound is an outstanding decision. Sharing the golden-years with them
is both a rewarding experience for the adopters as well as for the senior greyhound.

Special-Needs Greyhounds
Special-needs greyhounds are typically just your normal, loveable
greyhound who simply just needs it's adopter to give them a bit more care. Some have medications which they need on
a regular schedule, such as a pill daily, and some must have special care, such as a house with no stairs due to an injury
or careful monitoring due to certain medical conditions such as diabetes or seizures. Special-needs greyhounds still
make loyal and devoted pets, they just need a bit more care than the average pet.
Special-needs greyhounds have a heart made of gold and personality
more special than anything. Sharing a home with a special-needs greyhounds is an experience that the adopter will remember
for a lifetime. The love they share with their family will never be forgotten, nor will it every leave their hearts.
