Our Adoption Process

Greyhound Adoption League is a greyhound adoption agency run entirely by volunteers willing to spend countless hours finding homes for retired racing greyhounds.  And as much as we want to see every greyhound retired from racing adopted, we do not want to see these beautiful, elegant dogs placed in homes that are not appropriate for them.

For this reason, we do have an adoption process that we use to make sure that the greyhounds we place will be going to live in a home that is right for them.  We don't want the greyhound or the family to be unhappy with the adoption.  Although many greyhounds have the same base personality, they are individuals.  And as individuals, each of them will be different with their own requirements and personalities.

When you think about adopting a greyhound (or any dog, for that matter), the proper research should be done before making the commitment to adopt.

We ask that you take the time to research living with an ex-racing greyhound.  We can recommend a couple of books.  We do ask that you only consider crating with close supervision from GAL if it should be needed temporarily.

Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood

Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan

For Families with children, we would also ask that you read the following book:

Childproofing Your Dog by Brian Kilcommon

These books can be found at most bookstores, pet stores or purchased online.

An adoption application may be filled out at any of GAL's Adoption Day Events.  One of our adoption counselors will discuss information pertaining to the care and safety of the greyhound you are considering adopting.  Please keep in mind that not all individuals or homes are right for a retired racing greyhound.  If your application is approved, your adoption counselor will speak with you about completing the adoption and answer any questions you may have.

GAL has a non-refundable adoption fee of $175.00 which partially covers our cost of the spaying or neutering of your dog, a dental, vaccinations, deworming and applying Revoluntion for flea and tick control.  You will also receive one of GAL's greyhound information booklets that will have the phone number of your adoption counselor and Mary King, GAL's kennel master who will be your support team.  They are their to help with any concerns about your new addition to the family.

Invisible/underground fencing is not an acceptable containment system for greyhounds!!!! Greyhounds can go from 0-45 miles/hr in 3 strides and invisible fencing will not hold them back, once they reach that speed.  Tie outs and clothesline type runs are not acceptable containments, either.  When a greyhound reaches the end of the line at 45 mph, they will break their neck in a snap.  Greyhounds are meant to be house companions and that is the only acceptable environment for your new dog.
