Greyhound Adoption League has greyhounds that are ready for adoption. they are no longer racing due to age, injury (which in no way effects them as a pet) or simply were not fast enough.
These intelligent, graceful creatures make uncommonly good housepets, thriving on love and attention.  These docile sighthounds reward theri families with a lifetime of unconditional love.
Greyhounds are eager to please, so they respond best to praise.  The more love you give to them the more love they give to you.

GAL's Greyhound Information

Here are a few things to know about that greyhound you are looking at adopting...

Feeding
The average greyhound will eat daily about 4 cups of dry food with some canned food and water mixed in.  Cooked vegetables, applesauce, cottage cheese, or yogurt are favorites with their food.  Vanilla ice cream or marshmallows can be a great treat.

Exercise
Greyhounds do not require a great deal of space.  Most fenced in back yards are enough to get plenty of leg stretching play.  In apartments or condos you will need to plan on taking your greyhound out on walks.  On the track they are outstanding sprinters, but in your home they are couch potatoes.  But they always enjoy outings with you.  Greyhounds, being sighthounds, can never be let off of leash when not in a completely enclosed area.  If you jog, after conditioning, you will have the best companion possible on a leash.

Indoor Pets
Greyhounds love to romp, play and sunbathe, but when finished, they belong indoors.  They naturally have very little body fat and a thin coat that offers little protection from heat or cold.  Even when they were active racers, they were housed in climate controlled kennels.

Greyhound other pets & Children
Greyhounds have lived their entire lives with other greyhounds, but being social by nature they are remarkably compatible and enjoy the company of most other dogs.  Because of their non aggressive nature, we cannot place a greyhound with any other breed that does have aggressive tendencies.  A track greyhound may never have seen a cat before, so extra caution, patience and close monitoring is required. GAL "kitty tests"  most of our greys.  Being gentle and sensitive, greyhounds are very patience with most children.  But like everything else, they do have a cut off point.  As the adult, you must teach your child to to respect all pets.

Last couple of things
Veterinarians who have worked with greys are one the first to say that the greyhound possesses one of the best temperments of any breed.

Housetraining can take a couple of days.  Learning stairs may take a few hours.  Finding the most comfortable spot in your home takes a few minutes.  The softest place in your heart, mere seconds.  But loving you will last a lifetime!!!
