Happy Tail: The End

Just a few weeks ago - on July 11, 2005 - the nation heard the news that 76 greyhounds were confiscated from bad living conditions at a Tucson kennel used for housing racing greyhounds.  Without comment on the background of the seizure, the fact that local adoption programs faced was that we had a daunting task ahead of us to find homes for so many greyhounds so suddenly.

Immediately, the State gave authority to Pima Animal Control Center to take custody of these greyhounds.  PACC staff stepped up to the call and opened kennels at their facility.  After hearing the news that the greyhounds would be kept there pending the State's decision of what their future would be, many people called to volunteer their time, money and goods to aid in taking care of these greys.

Greyhound Adoption League was named as the organization that would receive the greyhounds as they were released for adoption.  GAL has now successfully placed all of these greyhounds into homes.  As a volunteer non-profit organization, GAL relied on many others to help make this happen, and we'd like to thank all of you who came forward through your concern and love for these greyhounds.  We especially would like to thank the following:

Volunteers - Many of our foster families took on more dogs than were comfortable to manage, but did so without batting an eye.  We also had adopters and volunteers who stepped up and became foster parents for the first time and found out how rewarding it was.  New kennel volunteers came on board for a quick initiation into the world of greyhound care and adoption.  Others went to PACC to tend to the dogs while in their care to make sure the greyhounds' unique needs were met.  And, even more manned Meet'n'Greets at Tucson's Petsmarts as the final step in our long-legged friends' journeys.

Adoption Groups - It didn't take long for word to get out that we had an urgent need for adoptive homes.  Adoption programs - local and out-of-state - put their volunteers into high gear to make sure we were able to move these greyhounds through the adoptive process as soon as possible.  From AGR, who donated some of their kennel space while also taking in 6 of these dogs, to programs in surrounding states such as, Greyhounds 2 Go Adoptions, Homestretch Greyhound Rescue & Adoption, Greyhound Pets Inc., GPA Greater Northwest, Greyhound Adoption & Rescue of Nevada, who worked overtime to find even more adoptive families - all were dedicated to saving greyhounds.  Volunteer drivers stepped up for each haul and off they went across the Western United States with their precious cargo.

Veterinary Care - The greyhounds needed hygienic grooming, some needed medical attention, and all needed to be spayed or neutered and have their dental done before adoption.  Dr. Phil Comer, his wife, Kitty, along with their staff, Cyndi & Michelle worked tireless hours to make this happen at Tanque Verde Pet Hospital.  It was emotionally and physically exhausting weeks of overtime to handle this many dogs beyond their regular practice, but they stuck to it.  Tears were shed for some of the worst cases, but smiles persisted as "one more group" of greys left prepared for their forever homes.

Local Business Support - From Comcast who donated over $15,000 of broadcast time to successfully support our effort to find temporary homes for these greyhounds; to the 2 Petsmarts, one on Irvington and the other on Broadway, Ok Hay & Feed, Arizona Feeds and Eagle Pack who all graciously donated much needed food and supplies; to the Blair kennels, who gave us extra temporary kennel spaces; to all of the many other local businesses and individuals who stepped forward with donations of money and goods to care for the greyhounds... all quickly responded to support GAL in this urgent time of need.

GAL couldn't have done this alone.  Many individuals and organizations, each giving what they could, made a difference this summer.

74 greyhounds now lounge lazily in their forever homes.  Quickly fading are their memories of life as a working dog, replaced by new memories of being pampered with savory treats, loving touch, and soft beds.

Thank you, all!
